The work is done on metal cans: a rigid substrate, sometimes with residual moisture from the heat treatment and with protruding rims. That affects two things. The adhesive, which has to grip the metal under the specific conditions of each plant. And the label, which must cover the whole body of the can with a well-aligned overlap.
Here the application technology differs from other sectors. Etima CANFLEX works with hot melt glue applied through injectors directly onto the can, which provides good adhesion on metal and delivers the production rates that canning demands.
Two families. Cylindrical cans, the most common format in the canning industry. And odd-shaped cans, oval or rectangular, more typical of canned fish such as sardines, which are more complex to label and require a specific machine model.
For cylindrical cans, Etima CANFLEX covers diameters from 65 to 154 mm, equivalent to industry formats 211 to 603, with outputs of up to 800 containers per minute. The 53 mm diameter (format 202) is studied as a special execution.
Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 requires the name of the food, ingredients with allergens highlighted, net weight and drained weight, best before or use by date, batch number and details of the food business operator. On small cans the problem is almost never what to include, but where to put it.
